Best OEE software for job shops (2026)

Seven OEE and machine monitoring products used by CNC job shops, compared on the price each maker publishes, how it connects to machines and who it suits — with the source for every claim.

Updated · By Dev Hadvani, Founder of OpeEye

Short answer

The best OEE software for a job shop is the one that captures why machines stop, not just when. Of the seven compared here, three publish a price: OpeEye ($5 per machine a month), Scytec DataXchange ($47–$140) and Evocon (€189–€319). MachineMetrics, Guidewheel and TEEPTRAK quote per project.

What a job shop should check

  • Does it ask the operator why a machine stopped — at the machine, in a tap?
  • Does it work on your oldest machine, not just your newest?
  • Is the price per machine, with users unlimited?
  • Is there a contract, and what happens to your data if you leave?
  • Can you run it on two machines for two weeks before you sign?

Short on controllers? Read machine monitoring without a PLC. Want OEE worked through by hand first? Try the free OEE calculator.

Questions job shops ask

What is the best OEE software for a CNC job shop?

+

For a published low price and mixed old and new machines, OpeEye ($5 per machine a month). For deep CNC controller data at a published price, Scytec DataXchange ($47–$140 per machine a month). For monitoring plus MES and ERP integration from one US vendor, MachineMetrics (quote-based). For machines you can't touch, Guidewheel's clamp-on current sensors.

How much does OEE software cost per machine?

+

Published prices on the makers' own sites range from $5 per machine a month (OpeEye, outside India) through $47–$140 (Scytec DataXchange, plus a one-time activation fee) to €189–€319 (Evocon, on a one-year agreement). MachineMetrics, Guidewheel and TEEPTRAK quote per project. Add hardware: tablets, sensors or gateways.

What does OEE software need from my machines?

+

At minimum, when each machine runs and stops, and how many pieces it makes. That can come from the CNC control, a sensor on the machine's power or cycle signal, or an operator tablet. The reason for each stop and for each reject almost always needs a person — so good OEE software asks the operator at the machine.

Is OEE software worth it for a small job shop?

+

If it costs less than the hours it finds. A 10-machine shop on OpeEye pays $50 a month; one recovered hour of spindle time a week on one machine usually covers that. Start with a trial on your busiest machines and judge it on the stops it explains, not on the dashboard.

Can OEE be tracked without connecting to the machine?

+

Yes. Operator tablets log run, stop, pieces and rejects on any machine with no wiring; clamp-on current sensors detect running and idle from the power cable. A direct controller link adds exact counts, cycle times and alarm codes on machines whose controls support it.
